Stop looking at this transition as the end of life as you've known it - the big black hole into which you are about to freefall. Think of retirement not as an ending, but as a new beginning and as your next career move. While it can be scary to walk away from the identity you carried for so many decades, there are some excellent ways you can avoid a serious identity crisis:ġ. I missed the daily connection with other parents and with my son and my active role as “Mom.” I realized it was important to do a “lens” change-and reframe my identity and roles. Fast forward, although I'm still doing many of the same things at work, so still have my professional work identity, I actually felt a bit adrift when my son left for school. On the way home, I remember commenting how sad it was that so many people would be lost without the identity provided by what they did–whether it was work outside of the home or within the home.
